Numerical study on vortex-induced vibrations of a flexible cylinder subjected to multi-directional flows

Vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs) of a flexible cylinder subjected to multi-directional flows have been studied based on wake oscillator model. The flow comprises two slabs in different directions, with each slab having uniform uni-directional profile. dynamics the is described linear Euler–Bernoulli beam theory, and model uniformly distributed along hydrodynamic force acting it. coupled system has solved numerically using finite element method, simulations conducted angles between slabs. A large number initial conditions applied, more than one steady-state response captured. responses exhibit patterns: characterized by waves traveling opposite while other dominated single wave. cross-flow VIV primarily occurs local direction, transition its vibrating direction happens at interface flows. Such not observed inline VIV, significant double frequency appear both directions. Energy analysis shows that this boosted specific energy transfer pattern structure flow, which excites vibration some directions damps it others.
